Did North Dakota just decide to build a nuclear power plant?
No. On August 19, 2026, the Legislature's interim Advanced Nuclear Energy Committee wrapped its study without a site, a company, or a construction timeline attached to anything. What the committee agreed on is a process: find out which communities actually want a plant before anyone tries to put one somewhere. Sen. North Dakota is now trying to build that same bottom-up support before a company or the state ever names a preferred site. Committee members floated meetings in every county, or at minimum eight regions statewide, modeled on Utah's education campaign, which is currently the most aggressive in the country.

Nothing dramatic, and that's the honest answer. This process is measured in years, not months. Wyoming's community engagement work started well before TerraPower ever named Kemmerer. What I'd tell a client sitting on land or a commercial building in McKenzie or Williams County today is the same thing I'd tell anyone watching an early-stage development story: don't sell out of fear that you'll miss a boom that hasn't been sited, and don't buy speculatively on a rumor about a specific parcel. Do get informed, show up if your community holds a public meeting on this, and keep your property's paperwork and boundaries clean so you're not scrambling if real interest does eventually land nearby.
