LISTEN UP. Most people are one room away from changing everything. They just never get in it.

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Boardroom Mastermind, one of the most elite real estate groups in the country. With an acceptance rate of less than 4%, this is not a casual event. It is a room full of operators at the highest level, people who are thinking bigger, moving faster, and executing at a completely different level.

I’ve always believed this: getting in the right room changes everything. And after three days surrounded by some of the best in the business across every segment of real estate, that belief is stronger than ever.

But let’s break this down in a way that actually matters to you.

What the Boardroom Mastermind Really Is

At its core, this is not a seminar. It is not a conference. And it is definitely not a place people go to “feel motivated.”

It is a room where real operators go to sharpen strategy.

You are surrounded by people who own thousands of doors, manage large portfolios, run high-volume teams, and think in terms of systems, capital, and scale. The conversations are different. The expectations are different. The level of execution is different.

And what most people don’t realize is that a lot of the real value doesn’t even happen during the sessions. It happens in between. Over coffee. At breakfast. In side conversations where people are openly sharing what is actually working in today’s market.

If you are paying attention, those moments can completely change your trajectory.

And here is the part that matters most. That same concept applies to your real estate decisions.

The people you surround yourself with will either expand your opportunities or limit them.

Why This Matters for You (Even If You’re Not in That Room)

You might be thinking, that’s great, but I’m not trying to join a mastermind.

Fair. But you are making decisions in real estate. And those decisions are heavily influenced by who you are getting advice from.

This is where most people go wrong.

They rely on general information, online estimates, or agents who operate at an average level. And then they wonder why their results feel average.

In a market like Western North Dakota, especially in places like Williston, Watford City, and Dickinson, you cannot afford to operate that way.

This market is different. It moves differently. It is tied to energy, development cycles, infrastructure, and long-term economic drivers that most people don’t fully understand.

That is why experience matters.

At Proven Realty, we have built our business on being in the room. Not just literally, but professionally. We are constantly studying the market, working deals across residential, commercial, and industrial, and staying close to what is actually happening on the ground.

That is how you make better decisions.

Who Is Erik Peterson and Why That Matters Here

I’m not sharing this to impress you. I’m sharing it so you understand the lens this advice is coming from.

I grew up in a real estate family and later spent over a decade in financial advising, helping clients build and manage wealth. That background shaped how I look at real estate. Not just as transactions, but as long-term strategy.

Since founding Proven Realty, we have negotiated over $400 million in real estate across the Bakken. That includes everything from residential homes to large industrial projects, retail developments, and workforce housing

We’ve closed over 1,400 transactions, built one of the top teams in North Dakota, and consistently ranked among the best in the region with multiple Best of the Bakken awards.

Why does that matter to you?

Because the difference between a good decision and a great one often comes down to perspective. And perspective comes from experience.

When you are working with someone who has seen multiple cycles, negotiated complex deals, and understands both the financial and operational side of real estate, you are not guessing. You are making calculated decisions.

What Actually Separates the Best Agents in North Dakota

You will see lists online of top agents in Fargo, Bismarck, or Minot. And there are a lot of good agents out there.

But here is what most rankings do not tell you.

The “best” agent is not about volume alone. It is about alignment with your specific goal.

If you are buying your first home, you need guidance and education.

If you are selling, you need strategy, positioning, and marketing that actually drives demand.

If you are investing, you need someone who understands numbers, cash flow, risk, and long-term positioning.

And if you are operating in Western North Dakota, you need someone who understands this market at a deep level.

This is where a lot of people make mistakes. They choose based on familiarity or convenience instead of capability.

And that decision can cost you more than you realize.

The Real Takeaways From That Room

After three days in the Boardroom Mastermind, a few things became very clear.

First, proximity changes perspective.

When you are around people operating at a higher level, your standards shift. What used to feel big starts to feel normal. You start thinking differently without even realizing it.

Second, the right room shortens the learning curve.

You can spend years trying to figure things out on your own. Or you can learn from people who have already solved the problems you are facing. That kind of access is a shortcut most people never take.

Third, intention is everything.

The people in that room are not drifting through their careers. They are deliberate. They are focused. They know what they want, and they build around it.

And that is the biggest lesson.

You do not rise to the level of your goals. You rise to the level of your environment.

Pros and Cons Most People Don’t Consider

Being in rooms like this comes with real advantages. You gain access to better ideas, faster execution, and higher-level thinking. You see opportunities earlier. You avoid mistakes others have already made.

But there is also a challenge.

It forces you to level up.

You cannot stay comfortable. You cannot stay average. You are constantly being pushed to think bigger and execute better.

The same thing applies when choosing who you work with in real estate.

The right advisor will challenge your assumptions, push you to think long term, and help you see opportunities you might otherwise miss.

The wrong one will simply go along with whatever feels easiest.

Final Thought

We are incredibly grateful to be part of a network that operates at this level. But more importantly, we are focused on bringing that level of thinking back to our clients and our community.

Because at the end of the day, this is not about masterminds.

It is about results.

If you are serious about buying, selling, or building a real estate portfolio in North Dakota, you need to be intentional about who you are listening to and who you are working with.

If you want to have a real conversation about your goals and what the right strategy looks like for you, reach out.

Let’s build something that actually moves you forward.
