Big news for Williston and all of western North Dakota: Target is officially coming to town.

The City of Williston Economic Development Department recently announced that Target has selected Williston Square as the site for a new 134,000+ square-foot store. This will be the first Target location in western North Dakota and the sixth in the state, marking a significant moment for the region’s continued growth.

According to the City, this announcement reflects both current momentum and long-term confidence in Williston’s future. National retailers like Target conduct extensive research before entering a new market, evaluating population trends, economic stability, infrastructure, and long-term demand. Their decision to invest here sends a strong signal about Williston’s role as a regional hub.

Why This Announcement Matters

City leaders emphasized that this project is the result of years of planning, collaboration, and investment. Williston Mayor Howard Klug highlighted how Williston Square has been intentionally built piece by piece, beginning with local businesses and restaurants, and now anchored by a major national retailer that is expected to attract additional development.

Economic development officials echoed that sentiment, noting that the arrival of a major retailer strengthens Williston’s position as a commercial center for western North Dakota while supporting local jobs, services, and long-term economic resilience.

Location Details: Where the New Target Will Be Built

The new Target will be located at: 3022 Dakota Drive, Williston, ND within Williston Square, just west of existing businesses such as Slim Chickens, Genesis, Taco Bell, and 7 Brew.

This location aligns with the master vision for Williston Square, which is designed as a vibrant live, work, shop, dine, and play destination. The nearly 800-acre mixed-use development, built on the former Sloulin Field International Airport site, integrates residential, commercial, recreational, and civic spaces into a walkable and connected community.

What This Means for Williston Real Estate

From a real estate perspective, major retail investments often have lasting ripple effects. These projects tend to increase buyer confidence, support housing demand, and strengthen long-term property values. They also make communities more attractive to relocating families, professionals, and businesses comparing regional markets.

For homeowners, investors, and those considering a move to Williston, Target’s arrival reinforces what local data has already shown: this is a community built for long-term stability, not short-term cycles.

A Strong Signal for the Region’s Future

Economic Development Director Anna Nelson noted that this project not only fills a regional retail need, but also reflects the growth Williston has already experienced and the expansion expected in the years ahead. Increased traffic, additional business interest, and continued investment across the city are anticipated as Williston Square continues to develop.

Simply put, Target choosing Williston is a vote of confidence in the city’s future.
